Tracking HD Using My Family Tree

Image
Retrieved from: https://familytreemagazine.com/general-genealogy/10-steps-to-start/ One hobby of mine that I work on in my spare time is genealogy. Genealogy is the study of family history and family trees. You can find so much information using Ancestry [some libraries you can get access for free] or even a simple google search. I have been working on my family tree for a few years and recently, I had a thought - could I use my family tree to potentially track Huntington's disease to earlier generations? I had previously mentioned the idea to my neurologist and he thought it could be feasible! With some research I came up with a somewhat algorithm to come to an "assumption"  as to whether or not an ancestor may or may not of had Huntington's. As genetic testing wasn't available until 1997, this was some what difficult. To maintain my family tree, I use  My Heritage  and their family tree builder.  I also use  Ancestry Library Edition  to find records - mar...

A Letter to Council - Asking for Local Recognition

Retrieved from: https://huntington.se/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Skarmavbild-2023-05-12-kl.-13.48.10.png  Next Month (May) is Huntington's Disease Awareness Month. One of the ways I was going to try to bring awareness to Huntington's is writing a letter to my local municipal council. Below is what I wrote to the Municipal Council for the Municipality of South Dundas. ** Members of Council, My name is Christian Mueller and I am writing to you today to ask that South Dundas Council formally recognizes May as Huntington's Disease Awareness Month. Huntington's Disease is a rare brain disorder that affects many families both in Canada and worldwide. In this email I'll give a short run down on Huntington's Disease and the impact has. Huntington's Disease, often called HD, is a rare brain disorder that has symptoms that are equivalent to having Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS, and Schizophrenia all at the same time. As well, Huntington's is genetic. It is...

The Test That Predicts The Future

Retrieved From: https://thehealthinsider.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Untitled-design-1024x533.png Most people who are at-risk for the Huntington's Disease genetic don't go through with predictive genetic testing. It is an extremely personal decision that takes so much reflection and consideration. In this post, I am going to talk a little bit about what led to my decision to be tested and what the testing process was like. Even from a young age, I had continuously considered whether or not I wanted to be tested for Huntington's Disease. Huntington's disease had (and continues to) wreacked havoc on so many people that I hold near and dear to my heart. I had witnessed first hand how horrific Huntington's is, mainly by seeing how it affected by mom over time. I think by the time I was fourteen, I had known that I would want to be tested. I had spent so much time learning about Huntington's. When possible, I made it the topic of my projects in school. I used any p...

The Worst Disease You've Never Heard Of

Retrieved from: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/14369-huntingtons-disease   Alzheimer's Disease  Parkinson's Disease ALS Schizophrenia Those four diseases are some of the most serious and worst diseases known to man. Personally, there is one that I like to think trumps them all...    HUNTINGTON'S DISEASE Huntington’s Disease (often referred to as Huntington’s or HD) is a rare, terminal, hereditary neurodegenerative disorder. The easiest way to describe it is to say it is almost equivalent to having Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, ALS, and Schizophrenia simultaneously. I say “almost equivalent” because for some sciency-biologyish way, not everyone experiences the disease process the same way. In the next few paragraphs, I’ll take a little bit of a deeper dive into Huntington’s - I have extensive personal experiences with it, so I consider myself a bit of an expert. Huntington’s is rare. The World Health Organization classifies a disease as “r...

An Introduction to Me and Huntington's Disease

Hello and Welcome to HD - It's Not High Def Anymore! The Test Result That Changed My Life   My name is Christian and on May 4, 2022 I was was told the above result by a medical genetcist from the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario - I inherited a genetic mutation. This genetic mutation causes Huntington's Disease. This horrible disease is prevalent in my family - my grandfather and mother both passed from it.  When asked to describe what Huntington's Disease is, the first words that often pop into my head are " the worst disease you've never heard of ". Huntington's is a rare, terminal, neurodegenerative disorder that is often referred to as having ALS, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's and Schizophrenia simultaneously. It's an autosomal dominant genetic disorder - that's just a fancy science-y way of saying that Huntington's is caused by a genetic mutation. Autosomal dominant just refers to the way the genetic mutation is pass...
